A dental crown is a versatile dental restoration used to address cosmetic and restorative dental concerns. The dental crown is a highly durable, permanent solution that looks and functions like a natural tooth. The dental crown fits over all sides of an existing tooth or can be secured in place using a dental implant.
A dental crown may be used to:
- Repair a broken or damaged tooth
- Whiten a discolored tooth
- Stabilize a tooth after a root canal
- Replace a missing tooth with an implant
A dental crown is custom designed to look like your natural tooth and is nearly indistinguishable from your real teeth. Fabricated from high-quality dental porcelain the dental crown reflects like like natural teeth. Your Palmetto Smiles dentist will consider the shape, size, and color of your smile in order to create the most lifelike dental crown possible.
The process for receiving a dental crown will vary depending on the reason the crown is being placed. Dr. Sang will explain your personal treatment plan in-depth prior to your procedure and will keep you informed of what is going throughout the process.
Patients who receive a dental crown after a root canal or to repair a misshappen or damaged tooth will first have their tooth prepared. Some tooth structure will be removed to make space for the crown to fit over the tooth and to lay evenly with the neighboring teeth.
Once the tooth is prepared molds are taken and used to create a secure and accurate fit. The dental crown is fabricated in a dental lab out of the most modern dental materials available.
The dental crown will be tested for comfort, design, and function before being permanently bonded into place.
Implant secured dental crowns will require the surgical placement of a dental implant. Dr. Sang will coordinate the surgical phase of the implant. The implant is allowed to heal for 3-6 months prior to securing the final dental crown in place.
