That first dental visit can feel like a big deal. For parents and kids alike. Maybe you’re wondering when to schedule it. Or what exactly happens once you get there. Or how to explain it all to a toddler who’s never even seen a dentist before.
Take a breath. It’s simpler than you think. And starting early is one of the best things you can do for your child’s long-term oral health.

When Should You Schedule the First Visit?
The general rule is simple. Schedule that first appointment after your child’s first tooth comes in. Usually, that’s around age one.
We know that might sound early. But starting dental care early sets a foundation for healthy habits that stick. It also helps children get comfortable with the dentist, which can prevent dental anxiety down the road.
At Palmetto Smiles, we welcome children of all ages. Our practice is designed to care for every member of your family, from the littlest ones to seniors.
What Happens at That First Appointment?
Good news. That first visit is usually short and involves very little treatment.
Dr. Sang or one of our associates will gently examine your child’s teeth and gums. They’ll check for early signs of decay and evaluate habits like thumb sucking. We might clean their teeth and apply topical fluoride to help protect against cavities.
Depending on your child’s age and comfort level, we may also take X-rays. These help us check on the progress of permanent teeth growing under the gums and reveal any hidden decay.
And you won’t be left out. We’ll review with you exactly how to clean and care for your child’s teeth at home. We’ll also make sure they’re getting the right amount of fluoride.
How to Prepare Your Child for the Dentist
You can make a big difference just by how you talk about the visit. We suggest preparing your child the same way you would before a first haircut or a trip to the shoe store. Keep it positive. Keep it simple.
Here are some tips that really help:
- Take a “preview.” If possible, bring your child by the office before their appointment. Just seeing the space can ease their nerves.
- Read books about going to the dentist. There are plenty of children’s books that make the experience feel fun and normal.
- Review what will happen. Tell them the dentist will count their teeth and take pictures. That’s it. No need for too much detail.
- Speak positively about your own dental experiences. Kids pick up on your tone. If you sound calm and matter-of-fact, they’re more likely to feel the same way.
Why It’s Worth Starting Early
Family dentistry means we’re able to care for every member of your family, no matter their age. And there are real benefits to bringing your child in early.
We can provide dental sealants, which are painted on the chewing surfaces of molars to provide an extra layer of protection against tooth decay. We can monitor wisdom teeth development when your child reaches their late teens. And we can catch problems early, before they become harder to treat.
Plus, when children visit the dentist regularly, they build a relationship with our team. They see that it’s nothing to be afraid of. You can even come back with them for support during treatment.
